Peggy Reimers – Lone Star Legend Author

The author for the Lone Star Legends is Peggy Reimers. She was born in the state of Washington, raised in Montana, and has spent the last twenty years in Texas. Did you know that about half of the people now living in Texas have migrated to this state within the last thirty years? When does a person know they’ve become a Texan? Peggy knows she is a Texan because she can eat tortilla chips and breakfast tacos drenched in salsa, understands Texas football is VERY important, has taught a few students named Bubba, looks forward to the bluebonnets of spring and enjoys serving as guide to visiting family and friends who wish to tour the
Alamo.

Peggy received a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Montana at Billings and her M.Ed. in Technology from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has taught twenty out of twenty-two years in Texas. “One of the best things about teaching in Texas is discovering the rich, remarkable history of the 28th state.”

Hooked on history since her seventh grade history class, she has always enjoyed that subject, so what a delight it was to discover Texas History! While teaching various grade levels, Peggy would always assign a large project where the kids would focus on research skills, and the integration of reading, writing, science and social studies. Each child would research a topic and then all the students’ family and friends were invited to a night of grand celebration honoring the students’ accomplishments. Themes throughout the years, included jungle animals, ocean animals, the fifty states, and dinosaurs.

Assigned to fourth grade, the only choice for the big research event was, of course, famous Texans. But helping 22 kids research many different people was a bit harder than animals or states. The information, when found, was either too little, or too much, or too hard to locate when half the class’ hands were raised seeking help all at once. Thus, the idea of a classroom set of profiles featuring famous Texans was born. From A to Z (that would be Stephen F. Austin to Lorenzo de Zavala,) the Lone Star Legends are a structured set about the diverse heroes who are an integral part of our treasured Texas history.
