Tammy Randall – Lone Star Legend Illustrator

Tammy Randall is the illustrator for the Lone Star Legends. She was born and raised in Houston, Texas. At an early age, Tammy was introduced to art at a summer camp where the visiting artist taught cartoon drawings. Even though she was younger than everyone else, he chose her work as an example. This event inspired Tammy to want to create more art.

For high school, Tammy’s parents enrolled her in a private school, Northland Christian School. Even though art was not a part of the curriculum, she created bulletin boards, decorations, and illustrations for the teachers.

One of her first jobs was to travel around to different churches in the state of Texas and present workshops on how to create visual aides. Tammy also did their book keeping (but didn’t much care for that part!)

Tammy received a BA in Art from Harding University in Arkansas. She and her husband traveled the country while he was in the military, but eventually they found their way back to Texas. “I loved seeing other places, but Texas has always been home to me. The people of Texas are friendly, and there seems to always be someone who will stand up for you.”

For the past seven years, Tammy has been teaching art to seventh and eighth graders at Cedar Creek Middle School in the Bastrop Independent School District. “I love seeing students discover talent they may not have been aware of.  For some students, art is the one place where they can really excel and feel good about themselves.” The Elisabet Ney Museum in Austin is her favorite place to introduce students to the work of professional artists. “Her sculptures are amazing. The work that she was able to do really opened the door for women as artists.”  Needless to say, her favorite Lone Star Legend is Elisabet Ney.
